Blogtember Day 6: Describe a distinct moment when your life took a turn.
I wish I could say I’m not going to go with the obvious answer with this prompt, but I am. Today I’m going to talk to you about the day I met my husband. If this isn’t your cup of tea, I encourage you to continue reading, because the thoughts that ran through my mind on that fateful night weren’t the typical thoughts that run through a young woman’s mind.
You see, I’ve always been a romantic. I always expected that ommm feeling when I met The One. Well, people, it doesn’t always happen like it does in the movies. It’s actually quite disappointing not having your own theme music playing in the background where ever you go. I digress. On our first date, B and I had never met face-to-face. We had communicated via e-mails, texts and phone calls. Right off the bat, I was impressed by his writing skills. Intelligence was always on “the list” of necessities for a significant other.
The night that we met I was held up in a university performance event. The university was celebrating an anniversary and Comcast was supposed to deliver fireworks. They took forever to set those things off. What was supposed to be a dinner date ended up being a late dinner. 10pm. Looking back, I’m lucky that he kept the date since he had just spent a whole week in the Midwest for work and had flown in earlier that day. (Bonus points for B).
When I finally met with him that night, I remember thinking Well, this is different. We talked, and we talked. The conversation flowed freely. This is a first. A date where, not only are we having a great conversation, but the guy actually seems normal. Too good to be true.
Then, I had a weird déjà vu moment. The waitress had sat us at a table for four. My purse sat on the chair next to mine, whereas B’s chair was empty. All of a sudden, a split-second vision flashed in my mind. I saw a young girl, under the age of ten, sitting in the empty chair next to B. Not only that, but the little girl was a blonde.
Whoa, whoa, WHOA there! What is this?! Was this a ghost? Could this mean…he’s the future father of my children? Get the heck outta here! And a blonde kid? Wtf? I love a good science fiction story but this was a bit of a stretch. And then, as quickly as that image came, it disappeared. I looked down at my cell phone’s time, and was shocked to see it was already midnight. I could have sworn we had only been chatting for 30 minutes or so. Weird.
We exchanged the It was nice meeting you and I had a good time pleasantries, hugged, and each drove our separate ways. I honestly thought he wasn’t interested in pursuing anything further with me. It wasn’t until a few days later when my best friends asked me about the date that I gave it more thought. When I told them that the date was different and I couldn’t explain why, they both exchanged a look of mischief that spoke volumes. That’s when I knew. I had something different on my hands.
It was the date that changed it all.
