I think we can all agree that beauty and self-care are super important to every woman. I remember, in my twenties, I sometimes did not wash my face or even remove my mascara before bed. Just the thought of that, now in my 30s, gives me a knee-jerk cringe reaction. Now I always wash my face before bed unless I want to break out all over.
Hitting the 30 milestone has really made me think about how I can better take care of myself. After all, we only have one body for the rest of our lives. If we treat it well, it will treat us well. Here are a few of the things that I’ve been more conscious about lately.
This is one I am SUPER guilty of not doing. Walking the dogs twice daily does mean I get some exercise in, but ideally I would also fit in strength training in. At the very least. Building muscles is important for two reasons. The first is for strength. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been working in the yard and am surprised at how little upper body strength I have now, versus when I did bicep curls with 40lbs in each hand.
The second, and most important in my opinion, is for your metabolism. When you build muscles tissue, your muscles actually burn calories even at rest. So, the more you lift weights, the more your body burns fat…even while you lounge poolside!
Did you know that muscles weigh more than fat? It’s true! Whenever I lift weights, I stay away from the scale, and instead reach for a measuring tape to see how my waistline measures up. Lifting weights to pack on muscle weight sounds counterintuitive, but I my waist (and thighs) were their smallest when I consistently lifted weights. At the time, I did it just to fulfill a college gym credit requirement, but I’m so glad I did it. Wearing skirts and dresses were so much more enjoyable, (coming from a thigh-chafing sufferer here) and it did wonders for my self-esteem.
Our doctors need us to be active participants and proactively monitor our bodies for changes. Who else, better than you, is going to know that a lump is more than just a monthly fluctuating lump than you? This is something that I try to do whenever I remember, and the National Breast Cancer Foundation provides a helpful video demonstrating how to do the self-exam.
Eating antioxidant-rich foods
Ever hear the term “free-radical?” In a nutshell, it’s all chemistry. The free radical theory of aging states that we age because of free radical damage over time. A free radical is basically an unpaired electron (digging way back to chem 101 here!) in a molecule (for example: inside a skin cell) that can be shielded from further damage with an antioxidant, like blueberries. Free radicals may play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases. Antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, may help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.
So, let’s preserve our youthful cells by eating a diet rich in antioxidants such as berries, beans, apples, avocados, leafy greens (such as spinach), and–my favorite–red wine!
A few years ago I did a friendly PSA on the importance of your yearly GYN appointment (or, the best schedule for you). Had I skipped this routine medical exam, I may not be here today. Thankfully my medical team caught the pre-cancerous cells in time and I’m finally in the clear, YEARS later.
Did you know skin in your intimate area can change with age just as the rest of your skin does? It’s also the most sensitive, delicate, intimate skin on your body with more sweat glands than anywhere else. You have more sweat glands in your intimate area than your armpit!
I can attest to this, as I sweat profusely while walking around at Disney World! Excess vaginal sweat can be triggered by stress or tense moments. The excess sweat is quickly attacked by bacteria resulting in odors and/or vaginal irritation. Two of every three women have sensitive vaginal skin. This skin needs skincare products designed specifically for all of its unique qualities, including a very specific pH range which is important to your body’s own natural defenses in this area.

If you neglected to wear sunscreen in your carefree 20s, you might notice fine expression lines on your face. While I’m a full believer of “showing your life on your face” I feel my 30s are far too early for this. I’m making sure I wear sunscreen with at least 30 SPF
However, I’m not talking about only your skin, but also your hair! I’ve noticed that, while I still have an oily scalp that makes me wash every day (trust me, dry shampoo does not cut it for me!), my hair ends are super dry. Once or twice I week I use a hair mask made of natural oils. Coconut oil, olive oil, Brazilian nut oil (I use this one), or Argan oil all make for good hair masks.
But the best anti-aging advice I’ve ever received? Drink water. If I have more than one glass of wine a night, my skin shows it. Drinking water does wonders for you. You truly are what you eat, after all.
It goes without saying that beauty sleep is needed for, well, beauty. If I don’t sleep well, I’m guaranteed circles and bags under my eyes. And crankiness. Lots of crankiness. And, in a two-for-one beauty knockout, I’ve started bringing a glass of water to bed. That way, I can make sure I drink in some water before hitting the sack.
Also, this is when you want to make sure you use a different facial moisturizer formulated for nighttime, as it’s when your skin is its driest. Eye cream is now more of a necessity than a suggestion.
