I’m actually going to stop all the Christmas stuff around here for a quick minute and think about Thanksgiving.
Yeah, I’m one of those people. There’s pumpkin in the air and to me…that means Christmas is almost here. I already have wreaths hanging on the windows outside, there’s a huge wreath hanging in our living room, and I have started stalking Black Friday deals for Christmas trees. This will be the first year we actually have an actual tree, and not my cute little potted tree from Michael’s that came with all the trimmings. I’m excited. REALLY excited.
Speaking of Black Friday, if you’re like me and get anxiety about shopping, Brad’s Deals has e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g you could possibly need to know about Black Friday. All of the store ads are in there. It’s amazing. They even have an app for your phone. Glorious.
Anyway, back to the topic on hand. A few years ago I was speaking with a long-time friend and fellow singer about our Thanksgiving plans. Out of nowhere he asks me to repeat myself. The look on his face was confusing so I asked him what was so funny.
He said something along the lines of “Do you know that you put emphasis on the word THANKS of Thanksgiving?”
What? Isn’t that how its pronounced? THANKS-giving?
He laughed and said “it’s thanks-GIV-ing.”
Huh? Really? Now there are two thoughts running through my head. One is well, I’m from New York City and I probably pronounce things differently than people in the Mid-Atlantic, where we were. Two, English is my second language (even though I speak it with more ease than Spanish nowadays) so maybe it’s one of those vestiges of Spanish influence in syllable emphasis?
But if what we’re doing on this fourth Thursday of November is “giving thanks” (say that aloud…you’ll notice you say ‘thanks’ with more emphasis)…doesn’t it make sense that the more important word is “thanks?” No? I mean, giving is more of something I associate with Christmas, anyway.
Ever since that day I am actually afraid of having to say the word “Thanksgiving.” What if I pronounce it wrong? How do I even know which is the correct way of pronouncing it?
Welcome to my quirky world.
How do YOU say the word “Thanksgiving?”
